Various programs have been held in Mongla on the occasion of World Rivers Day on Sunday, September 26, calling for an end to occupation and pollution. Among the programs held at the mouths of Pashur and Mongla rivers were plastic waste cleaning campaigns, human chains demanding protection of rivers, children’s drawing competition titled “River Matrik Bangladesh”, swimming competition and river-centric song chat. These day-long programs were jointly organized by the environmental organizations Pashur River Waterkeeper, Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA), Waterkeepers Bangladesh and Badaban. The World Rivers Day program got off to a good start with a symbolic plastic waste clean-up operation in the area adjacent to Pashur and Mongla rivers at 10 am on Sunday. Convener of Bagerhat District Committee of Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) Pashur River Waterkeeper Md. Nur Alam Sheikh, Acting President for Citizen Sujan Mongla for Good Governance Prof. Nazrul Islam, Pashur River Waterkeeper Volunteers Nazmul Haque, Israfil Bayati, Mahruf Billah, Haldar, Abdur Rashid Hawlader, General Secretary of the Fishermen’s Association, Riaz, Youth Leader, Al Imran Izardar of Badaban and others.
Kamlesh Majumder, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, was present as the chief guest at the children’s drawing competition titled “River Matrik Bangladesh” and “River-centric Song Chat” at 3 pm. Assistant Commissioner (Land) Nayan Kumar Rajbangshi was present as special guest.
